The comparison I keep coming back to is a nutrition label. When you pick up a box at the grocery store, the label does not tell you whether the food tastes good. It tells you, in a format that is the same on every box, what is inside and what it costs you. An EPD does the same job for a mix design. It does not tell you the concrete is good. It tells you, in a format that is the same across producers, what that mix costs the environment.

That standardized part matters more than it sounds. An EPD is built to a published set of rules so that one producer's number can sit next to another's and actually mean something. And it is verified by a third party, not self-reported. That is what separates it from a marketing brochure.

What does GWP mean on an EPD?

If the EPD is the label, GWP is the calorie count. GWP stands for Global Warming Potential, and it is usually the headline number everyone looks at first. It reports the greenhouse gas emissions tied to producing one unit of that mix, expressed in kilograms of CO2-equivalent per cubic yard or per cubic meter.

Here is the part people miss. There is no single GWP for concrete. It is not a property of the material like a compressive strength you can look up in a table. It moves with the mix. And the single biggest lever is cement, because cement is, by a wide margin, the largest carbon contributor in most mixes. Reduce the cement, replace some of it with a supplementary cementitious material, and the GWP generally comes down. That last row is the one closest to my own daily reality.
